What is OV-chipkaart?

The basis for the OV-chipkaart in the Netherlands is a contactless chip card. The card contains an invisible chip. The chip is connected to an antenna, made of five copper wires. The chip can communicate with national equipment.

Technical system

The OV-chipkaart system is made up of the TLS Central Back Office and the systems of connected public transport companies. The OV-chipkaart system is a single, comprehensive, open-architecture system. This means that suppliers are free to develop their own equipment. There are five levels to the OV-chipkaart system.

Milestones

A decision was taken to introduce the OV-chipkaart in the Netherlands in phases. The first journey using an OV-chipkaart was made with RET in Rotterdam, at the end of 2004. The card was then gradually rolled out across the Netherlands.

Become a vendor

In order to become a vendor in the e-Ticketing system , it is first necessary to be qualified as a vendor. Once you are qualified as a vendor and the NDA has been signed, you can submit an application to certify your equipment. To prepare vendors for the certification process a workshop is offered.
