In 2012 we carried out a number of payment trials using the OV-chipkaart, in cooperation with NS Stations. These were very successful. In mid-2013 we will decide whether, how and with which partners we can market contactless payment. These trials match our vision for contactless payment and the OV-chipkaart.
For a long time there has been a demand among passengers and operators for increased convenience using the OV-chipkaart. This concerns activities linked to public transport but not legally a part of it, including use of the OV-chipkaart for purchases at station shops or paying for parking.
A trial was organised in Amersfoort by NS and Translink as early as 2011, in which cardholders used credit on an OV-chipkaart to purchase convenience items at the station. Around 1,000 cardholders participated in the trial. The most important objective of this trial was to test cardholders' enthusiasm for using the OV-chipkaart as a 'convenience card'. Participants' responses were very positive.
Due to the enthusiastic response to this trial, a strategic project was launched. The aim was to analyse how this function could be expanded. One of the factors that we took into account here was developments in the world of payment technology. We also paid particular attention to card security.
Based on our analysis we organised a number of further payment trials in 2012, in cooperation with NS Stations. We will decide in September 2013 whether, how and with which partners we can market contactless payment.
